playing with wooden blocks and a dose of ADHD

I’m going to show you a real project today!  It’s been a long time since I did any sort of craft, let alone with paint and wood.  Sometimes you need to just do it, am I right?  And lately, with a lot of things going on that are out of my control, I felt the need to smell those acrylic paints and mod podge something.

I’m sure you’ve been there.  Something or multiple things going on in your life where all you want to do is curl up and hide from the harsh realities the world hurls at us.  My escape seems to be 80’s music lately.  Yes, I’m a true child of the 80’s so putting in my earbuds and chilling out to some Depeche Mode or Bon Jovi seems to be just the mental massage I need.  Taking me back to a time when I was safe and carefree.  Daddy brought home the bacon and mom made my bed each day.  Although I’d love this to be the case today, I don’t think either of my parents would be too thrilled to relive this in 2016.  However, I was able to tune out today’s problems and put the paintbrush to the wood to create this fun project; a wooden calendar.

I bought this 2 years ago at a church thrift store.  I actually had no idea what it was because I was rushing through the store to grab any craft supplies I could find to get home to cook dinner for my husband before he got home.  Wait, that’s a lie.  I didn’t know what it was because I have ADHD and didn’t take the time to actually read the label!  2 years later, I read the label, (laughing to myself) and see it was a Home Depot children’s project for those classes they teach for “little builders” or whatever it’s called.  Burn on me for not reading it.  However, it’s still a cute idea and I’m glad I finally got to make it into a usable item.

So, instead of throwing out this cast off project from someone’s child who didn’t want to make it, I scored and made my own feminine version.  Wait, I gotta go play the drum solo (in the air of course) on “Rush, Tom Sawyer”…brb.  😉  Does anyone else have this problem?  You know, people tease you and say, “squirrel,” and you go off chasing your acorns.  Actually doing a project seems to be getting harder and harder as I get older.  I find that either I’m checking my phone or planning my next meal while my friend is pouring her heart out to me about her latest break up.  Seriously!  I read something recently about multitasking with our computers and smartphones is robbing today’s society of our mental focus and called it, “milkshake mentality”.  I get that.  I really do.  (As my eyes dart over to check my phone for new FB likes.)

Anyway, I picked out the colors and painted my wooden pieces.  Then, I found a bunch of old stickers I bought on clearance from some craft store that look super cute and evenly spread them out all over the calendar.  I like how it turned out, even if I was watching tv and checking my emails during the project. 😉

Does anyone have any tips to share on how to stay focused?  I’d love to share them!
